Magnus Church of England Academy
Magnu s Church of England Academy is a mixed secondary school and sixth form in Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire, England. It is an Anglican academy for students aged 11 to 18 and currently has about 729 pupils, including 16–19 study programmes. The headteacher is A Martin.
The school has a long history dating back to 1532, when Thomas Magnus founded a Free Grammar School in Newark. The original building is now part of the Civil War Museum, and a new campus on Earp Avenue opened in 1909. Over the years, Newark had several related schools, including the Lilley & Stone Girls’ High School on London Road and the Grove School. In 1977 a voluntary controlled comprehensive school opened on the Magnus site (Earp Avenue), and later the Magdalene High School on Barnby Road joined with it to form the current school group.
In May 2008 the school faced performance difficulties and later converted to academy status on 1 February 2014, becoming Magnus Church of England Academy. It is sponsored by the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham and, for admissions, works with Nottinghamshire County Council. The school's address is Earp Avenue, Newark-on-Trent, NG24 4HU, England. The official website is magnusacademy.co.uk.
