Pitch (TV series)
Pitch is an American drama series created by Dan Fogelman and Rick Singer that aired on Fox in 2016. The show follows Ginny Baker, a talented young pitcher who becomes the first woman to play in Major League Baseball when she is called up by the San Diego Padres. The 10-episode series ran from September 22 to December 8, 2016.
The series was filmed in San Diego with MLB cooperation and planned to use Petco Park for certain scenes. The main cast includes Kylie Bunbury as Ginny, Mark-Paul Gosselaar as her manager Mike Lawson, Ali Larter as Amelia Slater (replacing Elisabeth Shue), Mark Consuelos as general manager Oscar Arguella, and Mo McRae, Meagan Holder, Tim Jo as teammates, with Dan Lauria playing Al Luongo.
A pilot was ordered in 2015, Fox gave the go-ahead for a full series in May 2016, and Pitch premiered that September. Fox canceled the show in May 2017 after one season, despite positive reviews and strong performances.
Reaction from critics was favorable. Pitch earned a 93% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes from 55 reviews, with an average rating of 6.9/10, and a Metacritic score of 69/100 based on 27 critics. Critics praised Bunbury’s performance and the show’s timely themes, comparing its feel to Friday Night Lights.
There were ideas for a second season that would explore Ginny’s comeback and other MLB storylines, but the series did not continue. Pitch offered a bold look at a woman breaking barriers in professional sports, but it lasted only one season.
