Howie Auer
Howie Auer (Howard Joseph Michael Auer) was an American football player, wrestler, and coach born January 9, 1908, in Detroit, Michigan. He played for the Michigan Wolverines from 1929 to 1931, starting at tackle in most games and serving as the wrestling team captain in 1931. He helped Michigan win Big Ten co-championships in 1930 and 1931, and was named a first-team All-Big Ten by Hank Casserly for his versatile play on both offense and defense. He was also selected second-team All-Big Ten by United Press in 1932.
After college, Auer played for the Philadelphia Eagles in 1933. He then coached Flint Central High School football from 1939 to 1953, posting an 83-39-5 record and an undefeated 1947 state Class A championship. He later coached five players who went on to the NFL. Auer lived in Venice, Florida in his later years and died on November 12, 1985, at the age of 77. He was inducted into the Greater Flint Area Sports Hall of Fame in 1988.
