Philippa Walton (archaeologist)
Philippa Jane Walton FSA FHEA is a numismatist and archaeologist. She is a Lecturer in Roman Archaeology at the University of Leicester.
She studied Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic studies and Classics at Girton College, Cambridge from 1995 to 1998. After university, she worked in commercial archaeology and for the Portable Antiquities Scheme for about ten years. Walton earned her PhD at University College London in 2011, with a thesis titled “Rethinking Roman Britain: an applied numismatic analysis of the Roman coin data recorded by the Portable Antiquities Scheme.”
Walton was a finds specialist on Time Team from 2005 to 2011 and has returned for the show’s new Patreon-funded version. She was the first woman to win the Blunt Prize for Numismatics from the British Numismatic Society. She was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London in January 2025 and is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She serves as a Trustee of the Roman Research Trust.
