Philip James Devereaux
Philip James Devereaux is a Canadian cardiologist, clinical epidemiologist, and perioperative care physician. He conducts research in cardiac and perioperative medicine, focusing on vascular surgical complications. He holds several senior roles at McMaster University and in Canadian health research: Chair of the Institute Advisory Board of Circulatory and Respiratory Health at the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR); Professor in Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact and in Medicine at McMaster; Canada Research Chair in Perioperative Medicine; Endowed Salim Yusuf Chair in Cardiology; Senior Scientist and Scientific Leader of the Perioperative and Surgical Research Group at the Population Health Research Institute; and President of the Society of Perioperative Research and Care. He earned his MD and PhD at McMaster University under Gordon Guyatt and Salim Yusuf. His medical training includes Internal Medicine at the University of Calgary and Cardiology at Dalhousie University. He has written more than 270 peer‑reviewed papers, more than 50 book chapters or editorials, and over 900 abstracts and presentations. Since 2017, he has been listed as a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher every year and has over 292,000 Google Scholar citations, ranking among the world’s most cited scientists (around 4100th).
Key contributions include helping establish Canada’s first Perioperative Cardiovascular Fellowship Program at McMaster (now the Perioperative Care Fellowship Program); organizing the first international Perioperative Care Congress in 2017; co-founding the International Society for Perioperative Research and Care in 2019 and serving as its first President; and leading the Accelerating Clinical Trials (ACT) consortium in Canada since 2023 to boost clinical research capacity and randomized trials, supporting about 230 researchers. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. His awards include the CIHR-CMAJ Top Achievements in Health Research (2011); Tier I Canada Research Chair (2017); ASA Honorary Member Award and CMAE Merit Award (2018); MacOrtho Award of Excellence and UNIVANTS award for Best Practice (2019); Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (2020) and the Sackett Mentorship & Supervision Award (2020); and the CIHR-ICRH/CCS Distinguished Lecturer Award (2021).
