Pesqueira, Pernambuco
Pesqueira is a municipality in the Northeast Brazilian state of Pernambuco. It covers about 981 square kilometers and sits at about 654 meters above sea level. In 2020, about 67,735 people lived there.
The area was settled in the 1660s. It was founded on May 13, 1836, when the local seat moved from Cimbres to Poço de Pesqueira. In 1880 the village was renamed Águeda de Pesqueira, and in 1913 the whole municipality began to be known as Pesqueira. In 1918 it became the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Pesqueira. The old district of Cimbres is known for Marian apparitions reported in 1936–1937.
Indigenous languages such as Tchili and Walêcoxô were once spoken in Cimbres, and the Paratió language (related to Xukuru) was said to be spoken by a few people there. Today, Pesqueira’s economy is based on commerce, services, and the primary sector (farming and related activities). The mayor is Evandro Mauro Maciel Chacon, and the area uses Brasília Time (UTC-3).
