Perisama bomplandii
Perisama bomplandii, commonly known as Bomplandi's perisama, is a butterfly in the Nymphalidae family. It was first described by Guérin-Méneville in 1844.
Taxonomy: Kingdom Animalia; Phylum Arthropoda; Class Insecta; Order Lepidoptera; Family Nymphalidae; Genus Perisama; Species bomplandii. Binomial name Perisama bomplandii (Guérin-Méneville, 1844).
Size and appearance: The wingspan is about 45–50 mm, making it the largest Perisama butterfly. The upperside is usually blue-black. The forewings have wide bands of golden green or blue crossing from the leading edge to the inner margin, and there may be a small white spot near the apex. The hindwings’ outer edges are greenish or blue, with a bright blue base. The underside of the forewings is black with five blue spots, a brown inner margin, a gray base, and a light blue area; the apex and outer margin are gray. The underside of the hindwings is whitish or gray with two black lines.
Variability: Color and pattern vary among subspecies.
Larval food: The larvae feed on Serjania species.
Distribution: This species can be found in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela.
