Pastel is an extended version of the Pascal programming language, created in 1982 for Amber, the operating system used on LLNL's S-1 supercomputer project in California. The Pastel compiler inspired Richard Stallman’s GNU C compiler. It was conceived by Jeffrey M. Broughton, who led the S-1 project’s compiler and OS software, because he was unhappy with using PL/1 for Amber. The language was named Pastel, meaning "an off-color Pascal." Compared with other Pascal compilers of its time, Pastel offered more features.
