Paraguay campaign
Paraguay Campaign (1810–1811) was a Buenos Aires–led effort to bring Paraguay under the new government after the May Revolution. General Manuel Belgrano led about 1,000–2,000 troops across the Paraná into what is now Paraguay, facing a larger Paraguayan force of around 3,500 led by Velasco and supported by local patriots, including Fulgencio Yegros. The first battles near Campichuelo and Campo Maracana were victories for Belgrano, but the battles of Paraguarí and Tacuarí ended in heavy defeats for his army. Belgrano eventually withdrew, and the campaign concluded in March 1811. For Buenos Aires, it was a military failure, but it helped Paraguay break its link with Buenos Aires and move toward independence from Spain, which it proclaimed a few months later. Paraguay and Buenos Aires later continued to have ties but were separate political entities.
