Palazzo Turchi
Palazzo Turchi, also called the Palazzo dei Diavoli, is a brick fortress near Siena’s outer walls, close to Porta Camollia between Viale Cavour and Via Fiorentina. It sits on the site where in 1526 a combined Florentine and Papal army under Clement VII was defeated by the Sienese. The tall tower is the remaining medieval part, built by the Turchi family, possibly with Cecco di Giorgio as architect. Guides call it the Palace of the Devil for various reasons—some say the site was used for devil worship, others say the Sienese won with help from the Devil against the Papal army. The present structure owes much to 19th-century reconstructions.
