Malcolm M. Mercer is a Canadian lawyer who served as the 67th Treasurer of the Law Society of Ontario from 2018 to 2020. The Law Society regulates about 50,000 lawyers and paralegals in Ontario. As Treasurer, he led Convocation, the society’s governing board, and helped set its agenda and committees. Treasurers are elected each June and usually serve two terms. In November 2020, Mercer was named Chair of the Law Society Tribunal for a four-year term. He won the Canadian Bar Association’s Louis St-Laurent Award of Excellence in 2013. Mercer earned a B.Sc. in 1977 and an LL.B. in 1982 from the University of Toronto and was a partner at McCarthy Tétrault in Toronto, focusing on commercial and corporate litigation and professional negligence; he retired in 2020. He has also chaired the Victorian Order of Nurses Canada and teaches legal ethics as an adjunct professor at Osgoode Hall Law School, York University.
