Pa-O National Organisation
The Pa-O National Organisation (PNO) is a political party in Myanmar that represents the Pa-O people. It was founded in 1949 and is led by Chairman Khun Aung Kham Hti. The party’s headquarters are in Taunggyi, Shan State.
The PNO administers the Pa-O Self-Administered Zone, a region in southern Shan State that includes Hopong, Hsi Hseng, and Pinlaung townships. It works on agricultural and work programs and helps build schools and hospitals in its area.
Its armed wing is the Pa-O National Army (PNA), which has about 400–700 fighters. The PNA is a close ally of the Burmese military, and the PNO has ties to the military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP).
In elections, the PNO holds a small number of seats: 1 of 224 in the Amyotha Hluttaw (upper house), 3 of 440 in the Pyithu Hluttaw (lower house), and 6 of 151 in the Shan State Hluttaw.
Ideology and symbols: the party emphasizes Pa-O interests and promotes Buddhist nationalism and ultranationalism. Its colors are blue, green, and red. Website: pa-onational.org.
