Overboard! (known as Shipwreckers! in North America) is a lighthearted top-down adventure game from Psygnosis for PlayStation and Windows, released in 1997. Players control a pirate ship crewed by three pirates shown in cutscenes. When the ship catches fire, the pirates jump overboard until their lifebar runs out. The game is mainly an adventure, though some call it a strategy title. It also includes a multiplayer mode for up to five players (with a multitap) where opponents try to sink each other’s ships. The game was showcased at E3 1997, and its soundtrack was composed by Stuart Duffield.

Release dates spanned late October to November 1997: PlayStation in Europe on October 24 and in North America on October 28, with Windows releases following in November (NA November 19; UK November 21). The timing put it in a holiday season crowded with bigger-budget titles.

Reception was mixed. Critics praised the game’s unusual, original idea and some memorable moments, but many felt it lacked depth, especially in single-player, and could become repetitive. The controls and water graphics drew some acclaim, though the music received mixed reactions. The multiplayer mode was generally seen as the strongest point, offering an addictive party-game experience. Comparisons to The Lost Vikings and Sid Meier’s Pirates! were common, with many noting Overboard! is charming and original, even if it isn’t for everyone.
