Oberhelfenschwil
Oberhelfenschwil is a small place in eastern Switzerland, in the canton of St. Gallen. It used to be its own municipality in the Toggenburg district. On January 1, 2023, Oberhelfenschwil merged with Hemberg to form the new municipality of Neckertal.
The area covers about 12.7 square kilometers and sits at about 805 meters above sea level. Most of the land is used for farming or forests. The village of Oberhelfenschwil includes several smaller hamlets: Wigetshof, Oberwil, Metzwil, Wasserfluh, Rennen, Winzlisau, Utenwil, Schwanden, and Füberg. It is surrounded by the towns of Brunnadern, Bütschwil, Ganterschwil, Lichtensteig, Mogelsberg, and Wattwil.
As of 2020, about 1,241 people lived in Oberhelfenschwil. Most residents spoke German, with a small number from other countries.
The name Oberhelfenschwil was first written down in 882 (as Helfoltiswilare) and was called Oberhelfenschwil by 1515.
The local economy included farming, small businesses, and services. Unemployment was very low in the early 2000s. Many people worked outside the municipality, commuting to jobs in surrounding areas.
