Oatchi

Oatchi is a Space Dog and Rescue Pup who first appears in Pikmin 4 (2023) for the Nintendo Switch. He partners with the player as a member of the Rescue Corps, helping explore the planet PNF-404 to rescue Captain Olimar after a crash. Oatchi can be commanded to carry items, fight enemies, destroy obstacles, and transport both the player and Pikmin. He can jump small ledges, sniff out objectives, and even ride on his back. As a second captain, he can lead his own Pikmin squad for puzzles. He also has a “Super Pikmin” power that acts like ten Pikmin in battles or when carrying, and he can be controlled independently from the player.

In the story, the Rescue Corps’ mission on PNF-404 goes wrong, and the player teams up with Oatchi to locate the missing team and Olimar. Oatchi later develops a tail-leaf illness that prevents him from leaving the planet, so the player and crew seek a cure by defeating a giant dog-like creature whose DNA helps make the cure. Oatchi’s appearance is yellow fur with a white-tipped tail and a red collar; Moss is a larger green rival on the same planet.

Oatchi was created to give Pikmin 4 a fresh hook and to drive its narrative and gameplay. His dual role as a helper and separate captain influenced many game systems, including the Rescue Corps concept and the appearance of Moss. Critics praised Oatchi’s cuteness and usefulness, and many called him one of the best video game characters of 2023. He’s appeared outside Pikmin 4 in other media and merchandise, including a Pikmin Bloom costume, a cameo in Pikmin Finder, a Spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (2024), and plush toys.
