Play of Saint Lawrence
Play of Saint Lawrence
Play of Saint Lawrence (Auto de São Lourenço) is a famous 16th-century play by Joseph of Anchieta. It premiered on 10 August 1587 in the Village of Guaraparim, at Saint Lawrence Chapel, in the area that would later become the city of Niterói. The text blends Portuguese, Spanish, Old Tupi, and Old Guarani, and it reflects the social reality of the time. It includes ethnographic details and scenes such as the Battle of the Canoes. According to Armando Cardoso, the performance occurred during Anchieta's visit as provincial. The work was later adapted by Guilherme de Almeida.
