Alnwickhill
Alnwickhill is a suburb of Edinburgh, Scotland, on the southern edge of the city, about 4 miles from the centre. It borders Liberton and Kaimes and is mainly a residential area today. In the past it was the site of Backside Lee Farm, which was replaced by new housing in the 1970s.
The area has historic waterworks. The first covered reservoir and ponds were completed after 1875, designed by civil engineer James Leslie. A second covered reservoir was added in 1888, making a total capacity of 15 million gallons. The outlet houses were built in a Classic style by James Young and Son. The water originally came from Gladhouse Reservoir in the Moorfoot Hills, supplying East Edinburgh, Leith and Portobello. In 1905, water from the Talla Reservoir was added to help meet growing demand. The waterworks were listed as a building in 1996. They closed in 2012 after new waterworks at Glencorse Reservoir were completed. The site has since been restored and developed for housing, with one covered reservoir remaining.
