Carlos Jean
Carlos Jean Arriaga, born in 1973 in Ferrol, Galicia, Spain, is a Spanish DJ and record producer. He works mainly in electronic and indie pop music and is known for co-founding the group Najwajean with Najwa Nimri.
In 1998 he and Nimri released their first album, No Blood. Jean also started a solo career, releasing Planet Jean in 2000 and Back to the Earth in 2002, which included the popular track “Mr. Dabada.” He continued performing with Najwajean, releasing selections such as a compilation called Selection, and later releasing Mr. Miracle as a solo project in 2006 and Till It Breaks with Najwajean in 2008. “Mr. Dabada” was used in an Intel Core 2 Duo advertisement that aired around the world.
Since 2000, Jean has become one of Spain’s best-known music producers, working with artists like Alejandro Sanz, Miguel Bosé, Hombres G and Estopa.
After the 2010 Haiti earthquake, he released the charity single Ay Haití, featuring many Spanish and South American stars and a video with sports and entertainment celebrities. The song reached number one on the Spanish charts for two weeks.
In 2011 he launched Plan B, an online collaboration project where musicians could edit a base and add ideas. Ballantine’s sponsored the project, helping it grow. The accompanying compilation Introducing Carlos Jean came out in May 2011 and included Plan B work as well as his earlier hits. He then appeared regularly on the TV show El Hormiguero, where new Plan B tracks were created or remixed live. Some songs became popular on iTunes Spain, including a Hormiguero remix of “Lead the Way,” which reached number 9 on the Spanish singles chart. The show also led to live castings that produced short‑lived boy band Why Five and girl group Check Baby Check.
