Norge 1:50 000 (Norway 1:50 000) is the main series of 727 topographic maps at 1:50,000 scale, covering mainland Norway and nearby islands. In civilian terms it’s called Norway 1:50 000; the military designation is M711. The series began in 1952 and was completed nationwide in 1988. Maps are regularly updated, with about 60 new releases each year. Since 2012 the civilian edition has been printed on plastic sheets, double-sided, and in a larger format; one map sheet now equals four maps in the military series. The civilian set includes 212 different maps. It is maintained by Statens kartverk, the Norwegian Mapping Authority. The geodetic datum is EUREF89, roughly equivalent to WGS84. The maps are full color with place names and political boundaries, and have 20-meter contour lines. They’re useful for hiking and navigation. They can be bought in most bookstores, though stock varies.
