European route E5

The European route E5 is a major north–south road in the United Nations E-road network. It runs from Greenock in Scotland to Algeciras in southern Spain, covering about 3,100 km (1,900 miles). In the United Kingdom, E-routes aren’t posted on signs, so the first roughly 724 km of E5 aren’t marked.

There is a gap across the English Channel between Southampton and Le Havre, as there’s no direct E5 crossing. A nearby Portsmouth–Le Havre ferry option can connect to the route via the road network.

In France, the E5 heads south from Le Havre, passing Paris, Orléans, Tours and Bordeaux, and ends at Hendaye on the Spanish border. This French section is about 985 km (612 miles). The route then crosses into Spain at Irun, going through San Sebastián, Vitoria-Gasteiz and Burgos to Madrid. It continues south through Córdoba, Seville, Jerez de la Frontera and Cádiz, ending at Algeciras.
