Niyar Saikia
Niyar Saikia, born on 9 November 1999 in Guwahati, Assam, is an Indian actress and dancer. Her parents, Probin Saikia and Roshmi Rekha Saikia, are musicians. She started acting at age five and has worked in Assamese and Hindi films. Her first unreleased film was Butterfly Chase. She has performed in theatre and won a Best Actress award in an All India Multi-Lingual Children Play and Dance competition in Cuttack for playing a girl named Dhunumoina.
She studies Assam’s folk dances and songs at the Panchasur Institute and at Seagull theatre, and she trains in Sattriya under Padmashree awardee Jatin Goswami.
In 2014 she played Lakshmi in Sold, directed by Jeffrey D. Brown and based on Patricia McCormick’s novel. Lakshmi is a trafficked Nepalese girl sold to a brothel in Kolkata. She was chosen for the role after auditions of more than a thousand girls in Nepal and India.
