Nils Johan Alfred Malmer (25 May 1928 – 17 April 2018) was a Swedish plant ecologist. He studied at Lund University, earning his degree in 1957 and a PhD in 1962 with a thesis on mire vegetation in southwestern Götaland, South Sweden.

Early in his career he worked as a research assistant in limnology (1948–1950), a teaching assistant in systematic botany and plant ecology (1953–1959), and an assistant professor (1959–1963). From 1963 to 1993 he was a professor of plant ecology at Lund University. Malmer also served as Editor-in-Chief of the journal Oikos (1989–2004) and as vice-dean of the Faculty of Science (1974–1989). He was a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (member number 1255). His research focused on carbon cycling in boreal and Arctic peatlands, studying past and present productivity and decay in Sphagnum-dominated mires. Malmer died on 17 April 2018 at the age of 89.
