No Malice, who changed his name from Malice in 2012, had announced solo projects with Pusha T back in 2010. The album was originally planned for July 2, 2013, but was delayed to August 18, 2013. He described Hear Ye Him as an inspirational record reflecting his life story and a new creative direction.

Leading up to the release, several songs came out as singles with videos: “June” (featuring Eric David), “Unforgettable” (Life Dutchee), “Smoke & Mirrors” (Ab-Liva), “Bury That” (Jon Bibbs), and later “Shame the Devil” (Pusha T) and “Blasphemy” (Fam-Lay). The final tracklist included 17 tracks and multiple Virginia-based collaborators.

Critics generally praised the album. AllHipHop gave it a high score, highlighting thoughtful and strong rapping. XXL offered mixed notes on the production. HipHopDX gave it 3.5 out of 5, commending No Malice’s candor and new direction while noting it wasn’t perfectly balanced. Spin rated it 5/10, saying it shines when it moves away from proselytizing.
