Nicole Becker
Nicole “Nicki” Becker is a climate activist from Buenos Aires, Argentina. She co-founded Jóvenes por el Clima, part of Fridays for Future, and in 2021 was named a Young Champion for the Escazu Agreement and for Sanitation and Water for All (SWA).
Becker grew up in Caballito. Her father is a criminal lawyer and her mother is a math teacher. She started college studying psychology but switched to international law and is studying at the University of Buenos Aires. She has been involved in activism since childhood, including time with Habonim Dror and Ni una menos.
Her climate work began in February 2019 after seeing a video of a European climate march and being inspired by Greta Thunberg. In collaboration with Bruno Rodriguez and friends, she helped launch Jóvenes por el Clima so they could organize Argentina’s International March for the Climate Crisis on March 15, 2019, which drew about 5,000 participants. The group pressed for a Climate and Ecological Emergency Declaration, which the government announced on July 17, 2019.
In 2019 Becker received a grant to attend the UN Climate Conference in Madrid as a youth representative. She also represented Latin America in UNICEF and America Solidaria’s UnaSolaGeneración campaign during the COVID-19 pandemic. She attended COP25 in 2019 and COP26 in 2021, where she met UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
The Argentine Chamber of Deputies honored her with a diploma and medal on March 10, 2020 for her social action. In 2020 she was named one of five youth champions of the Escazu Agreement by The Access Initiative, UN ECLAC, and the Costa Rican government, and became a UNICEF Youth Advocate. In 2021 she was also chosen as a SWA Young Champion. She hosts a radio program, Permitido pisar el pasto, on FutuRöck with Bruno Rodriguez, and writes a column for El Diario.
