Malta, Ohio
Malta is a small village in Morgan County, Ohio, located on the west side of the Muskingum River opposite McConnelsville. The population was 559 at the 2020 census, and the village covers about 0.38 square miles. Malta was founded in 1816 and was named by an early settler who had visited the island of Malta. The Muskingum River and a system of locks and dams built between 1836 and 1841 helped the area grow as a transportation and trade hub.
One notable historic site is the Morgan County Dungeon, a small stone jail from the 1830s that was rediscovered in 1964 and is now preserved on Main Street with an Ohio Historical Marker. Rock Hollow School, a one-room schoolhouse originally built in 1877, has been moved and restored as a historical site. Other important landmarks include the Helmick Mill Covered Bridge (built in 1867) and the Adams Covered Bridge nearby, both listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Malta is also home to Malta Dynamics, a company founded in 2015 that makes fall protection gear and safety equipment. It is located at 210 13th Street and employs about 11 to 50 people. Each July, Malta and nearby McConnelsville host Civil War Encampment Days with reenactments, period encampments, cannon demonstrations, and educational activities.
