New Sharon Congregational Church
New Sharon Congregational Church is a historic brick church at 21 Cape Cod Hill Road in New Sharon, Maine. Built in 1845 in the Greek Revival style, it stands as a central landmark in the town’s center. The church is affiliated with the United Church of Christ and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
Description: The building is a rectangular brick structure facing southeast on a small rise. It has a front-facing gable roof and a simple pediment. A tower rises from the back of the main facade: a square first stage with tall lancet windows, an octagonal second stage with lancet louvers, and a dome crowned by a weather vane. The main facade has two entrances and a tall central window. Brickwork is restrained, with only basic corner pillars and a cornice as decoration.
History: The 1845 church replaced an earlier wood-frame building from 1816 that had served four denominations—Baptists, Methodists, Unitarians, and Congregationalists—as a shared meeting house. Over time those groups built their own churches. The church sits on a rise that includes a large grassy area, which is New Sharon’s town common.
Location and size: 21 Cape Cod Hill Road, New Sharon, Maine; the site covers about 1 acre. The church’s NRHP reference number is 85001261.
