Never Just a Dream
Never Just a Dream
Never Just a Dream is Emma-Lee’s debut studio album. It mixes pop, jazz, and folk. It was first self-released in late summer 2008, which caught the attention of industry people like David "Click" Cox. Emma-Lee and Cox started a co-management deal and re-released the album through Bumstead Productions, with Universal Music distributing in 2009. The album was co-produced by Mitch Girio and Emma-Lee.
The reviews were strong: The Toronto Star gave it 4 out of 4 stars, and The Globe and Mail gave 3.5 out of 4 and named it the disc of the week. NOW magazine described the music as laid-back jazz with tight pop structures, plus occasional country touches and hints of 60s girl groups. AW Music noted the focus on classic lounge-style instrumentation.
Lyrically, the songs explore romance, including jealousy, rebound relationships, and May–December pairings. Emma-Lee designed the cover herself, inspired by a photo of a red velvet frame. She felt the red velvet look matched the warmth of her voice and described the album’s sweetness as a "red velvet cupcake" feel.
