Netball in Niue

Netball in Niue is a popular local sport. Most games are played on Saturdays between June and August, though they can happen at any time of the year. Games are usually held on high school athletic grounds. Netball started as a women’s game, but now more men play too, helping villages stay connected.

In the Niue language, netball has several names: neteplo, pelê neteplo, and pelê.

The sport’s growth is sometimes slowed because it is not an Olympic sport, which makes it harder to fund travel for international competitions. Niue competes with Vanuatu, Tonga, the Solomon Islands, and the Cook Islands, especially at the Pacific Games.
