National Parks and Wildlife Service South Australia
National Parks and Wildlife Service South Australia (NPWSSA) is a South Australian Government service within the Department for Environment and Water. It was created in 1972 under the National Parks and Wildlife Act to manage South Australia’s national parks and other protected areas. Over the years it has been known by several names, including National Parks and Wildlife Service and National Parks South Australia. In 2019 it adopted the branding National Parks and Wildlife Service South Australia (NPWSSA), a name still used today.
NPWSSA oversees about 360 parks across the state, all protected under the National Parks and Wildlife Act and Regulations. Since 1995, it has employed seasonal firefighters to carry out prescribed burning in parks and surrounding private land to reduce wildfire risk. It also uses Project Firefighters to help with fire suppression during major incidents, working alongside the South Australian Country Fire Service, and they perform track maintenance and weed control in parks. The agency uses a range of fire vehicles and equipment to protect parks and respond to fires.
