The National Library of Uzbekistan (Alisher Navoi National Library) is in Tashkent and serves as the country’s legal deposit and copyright library. It began in 1870 as the Tashkent Public Library. In 1920 it became the State Public Library of Uzbekistan and the legal deposit for Turkestan publications. In 1947 it was named after the Uzbek poet Ali-Shir Nava'i. On April 12, 2002, it was renamed the National Library of the Republic of Uzbekistan and given national status. The library collects a wide range of materials, including books, journals, newspapers, magazines, official publications, sheet music, sound recordings, databases, maps, stamps, prints, drawings, manuscripts and other media.
