Nagwon Rice Cake
Nagwon Rice Cake (Korean: 낙원떡집; RR: Nagwon tteokjip) is a historic rice cake shop in Seoul. It began around 1912 and opened a permanent storefront in Nagwon Market in 1956. The founder, Go Ippeo, learned to make tteok from former royal court ladies after parts of Korea’s royal court left the palace during Japanese rule. He sold tteok in Wonseo-dong and Nagwon-dong. After Go’s death in 1961, his daughter Kim In-dong inherited the shop, and in 1980 Kim’s daughter Lee Gwang-sun took over when Kim moved to the United States. The shop grew in popularity from the 1980s onward and remains a family business into the 2010s. The Seoul Metropolitan Government has designated Nagwon Rice Cake as Seoul Future Heritage (ref. 2013-043) and an Oraegage for its historic value. The shop is located at 438 Samil-daero, Jongno District, Seoul.
