Freda L. Wolfson (born 1954) is a former United States district judge for the District of New Jersey. Born in Vineland, New Jersey, she is the daughter of Holocaust survivors. She earned a BA from Rutgers University’s Douglass College in 1976 and a JD from Rutgers Law School in Newark in 1979. Wolfson worked in private practice in New Jersey from 1979 to 1986. She then served as a United States magistrate judge for the District of New Jersey from 1986 to 2002. In 2002, President George W. Bush nominated her to the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, to fill the seat vacated by Nicholas H. Politan. She was confirmed by the Senate on November 14, 2002 and received her commission on December 4, 2002. She served as a district judge from 2002 until her retirement on February 1, 2023. She became Chief Judge on May 16, 2019, following the retirement of Jose L. Linares, a role she held until leaving the court; Renée Marie Bumb succeeded her as Chief Judge. After retiring, she returned to private practice as a partner at Lowenstein Sandler and chairs the firm’s alternative dispute resolution group.
