Toukh train accident
On 18 April 2021, a train derailed in Toukh, Qalyubiyya Governorate, Egypt. The crash killed 23 people and injured 139, with some passengers trapped under overturned carriages. It was the third major Egyptian train accident in a month. Investigators blamed negligence and mismanagement in the railway system. Preliminary findings said the train was traveling about 120 km/h on a stretch designed for much slower speeds, around 30 km/h. The driver, the driver’s assistant, and all signaling and tower workers in the crash area were detained as part of the probe. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi ordered Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly to form a committee including members from the Administrative Control Authority, the Armed Forces Engineering Authority, and the Military Technical College to determine the cause. Transport Minister Kamel Al-Wazir visited the site and said those responsible would be held to account. The Health Ministry redirected 58 ambulances to the scene to transport the injured. Ashraf Raslan, head of the Egyptian railway authority, was fired after the incident.
