My Imaginary Country (Mi país imaginario) is a 2022 documentary directed and written by Patricio Guzmán. Guzmán narrates how the student protests in Santiago on October 18, 2019 helped ignite Chile’s largest popular uprising and the consequences that followed. The 83-minute Spanish-language film was produced by Alexandra Galvis and Renate Sachse, with cinematography by Samuel Lahu, editing by Laurence Manheimer, and music by José Miguel Tobar and Miguel Miranda. It was produced by Arte France Cinéma and Atacama Productions. The film premiered on May 20, 2022 at the Cannes Film Festival and later screened at Jerusalem, Toronto, and San Sebastián film festivals. It was shortlisted as Chile’s entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 95th Academy Awards but was not selected. It opened in Chile on August 11, 2022, and was released in the United States and Spain on September 23, 2022. In its first week in Chile, it sold over 10,000 tickets; worldwide it grossed about $16,191. Critics praised it, with Rotten Tomatoes giving 94% positive reviews from 33 critics (average score 7.9/10) and Metacritic awarding 86/100 based on 8 critics.
