Muharem Serbezovski
Muharem Serbezovski, also known as Mumo, was born on May 2, 1950, in Skopje, then part of Yugoslavia. He is a Romani singer, writer and translator who has lived in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina since 1975.
He started performing as a child and released his first single at age 12 in 1962. He became one of Yugoslavia’s most popular Romani singers, especially in the 1970s and 1980s. He has released 12 albums and 22 singles/EPs. His music blends Romani sounds with pop-folk, Turkish, and Indian influences, and most of his songs are in Serbo-Croatian.
Serbezovski worked with Stevo Teodosievski and Esma Redžepova early in his career and later collaborated with many artists, including his brother Ajnur Serbezovski, Toma Zdravković, and Sinan Sakić. He has also pursued writing and translation, including translating the Qur’an into Romani and publishing novels and poetry.
His novels include Šareni dijamanti (1983), Cigani A kategorije (1985), Za dežjem pride sonce (1986), and Nitko ne zna puteve vjetrova i Cigana (1999), plus an essay on Romani rights in 2000.
In the 2000s, Serbezovski entered politics and joined the Party for Bosnia and Herzegovina, serving as a member of the Bosnian Parliament from 2006 to 2010. A 2009 remark about violence against women caused controversy, and he resigned from the party in 2010, citing discrimination.
