Moses Witbooi
Moses Witbooi (Khoekhoe name ǀGâbeb !A-ǀǀîmab) (1808–22 February 1888) was the second chief of the Witbooi Nama, a ruling clan of the Oorlam Nama people. He was born in Pella, South Africa, and was the son of Kido Witbooi, the clan’s founder. He acted as leader from around 1870 and officially became chief after his father’s death on 31 December 1875. In the 1880s, he allied with Jan Jonker Afrikaner against the Herero people. In late 1887 he was deposed by his son-in-law Paul Visser and was executed early in 1888. His son Hendrik Witbooi later killed Visser and reunited the Oorlam under his rule. Moses died on 22 February 1888 in Gibeon, German South West Africa.
