Montgomery Rebels
The Montgomery Rebels were the name used by several minor league baseball teams in Montgomery, Alabama, from the early 1900s until 1980. Over the years, Montgomery teams used many nicknames, but Rebels became the most common during several stretches. The teams played in a variety of leagues, including the Southern Association, Southeastern League, South Atlantic League, Alabama–Florida League, and the Southern League. Home games were mostly at Paterson Field (also called Municipal Stadium) from 1950 through 1980.
The Rebels’ most notable period was from 1965 to 1980, when the team operated as the Double-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers in the Southern League. The franchise won 12 league titles over its history: 1928, 1929, 1942, 1947, 1948, 1951, 1952, 1972, 1973, 1975, 1976, and 1977. The club also had affiliations with several major league teams over the years, most prominently the Tigers, along with stints with the Red Sox, Cardinals, Senators, Pirates, and Indians.
In 1981 the Montgomery Rebels moved to Birmingham and became the Birmingham Barons. Since 2004, Montgomery’s Southern League team has been the Montgomery Biscuits.
