Moifaa
Moifaa was a New Zealand-bred racehorse, foaled in 1897 and trained by W. Hickey. Owned by Spencer Gollan and ridden by Arthur Birch, the 17-hand gelding won the 1904 Grand National by eight lengths. He had earlier glory at home, winning the Great Northern Steeplechase at Ellerslie in Auckland. After the Grand National, Moifaa was bought for King Edward VII but never won again and was retired to the hunting fields in Leicestershire. He attended the King’s funeral in 1910, carried by Major General John Brocklehurst, a close friend of the King. The story that Moifaa survived a shipwreck before the Grand National is not true. Moifaa was honoured in the New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame in 2014.
