Mohammad Raad
Mohammad Raad (Arabic: محمد رعد), born 22 August 1955 in Beirut, Lebanon, is a Lebanese politician with Hezbollah. He has represented the Nabatieh District in Lebanon’s Parliament since 1992 and leads Hezbollah’s political wing, the Loyalty to the Resistance Bloc, in parliament, which is part of the 8 March Alliance.
Raad comes from a Shia Muslim family from Jbaa in southern Lebanon. He holds a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the Lebanese University. He is regarded as one of Hezbollah’s leading ideologues, sits on the party’s executive committee, and has served as the former chair of its political council. At one point, Iran’s parliament chose him as Lebanon’s representative on Iran’s Guardian Council.
In his political stance, Raad has said Hezbollah is a military resistance movement with no separation between politics and resistance. He has spoken on regional issues, including Iran’s nuclear deal and the Venezuelan crisis, where he supported Nicolás Maduro in 2019.
Raad was sanctioned by the United States in 2019 under anti-terrorism measures. In October 2019, protesters attacked his office during demonstrations over corruption and the economy. In 2024, he met Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and announced that Hezbollah would open a representative office in Moscow. That year he also drew controversy for remarks about people at beaches while the south faced attacks and for suggestions about influencing Western student protests over Palestine.
On the personal side, Raad is married to Fatima Barghul, and they have five children. Their son Abbas Raad, a member of Hezbollah’s Radwan Force, was killed in fighting with Israel following the October 2023 attacks.
