Hedwig of Sulzbach
Marie Hedwig Auguste of Sulzbach (1650–1681) was a German noblewoman from the House of Wittelsbach. She was born on 15 April 1650 in Sulzbach, the daughter of Christian August, Count Palatine of Sulzbach, and Amalie of Nassau-Siegen.
She held three titles during her life: Countess Palatine of Sulzbach by birth, Archduchess of Austria by her first marriage, and Duchess of Saxe-Lauenburg by her second marriage.
Her first marriage was on 3 June 1665 in Sulzbach to Archduke Sigismund Francis of Austria-Tyrol. He became seriously ill while traveling to meet her and died twelve days after the wedding, so the marriage was never consummated.
Her second marriage was on 9 April 1668 in Sulzbach to Duke Julius Francis of Saxe-Lauenburg. Her father had a memorial stone placed in the Sulzbach parish church to mark the event. There were financial arrangements tied to the marriages: initially she was promised 20,000 guilders a year from the first marriage, but Julius Francis later secured a lump-sum settlement with the imperial court.
Hedwig died on 23 November 1681 in Hamburg, aged 31, and was buried at the White Castle in Ostrov.
From her second marriage she had children, though their names are not listed here.
