Mohamed Kabil
Mohamed Kabil, born Abdel Aziz Mohamed Kabil on 14 March 1927 in Al Azizeyah, Egypt, was a well-known Egyptian footballer who played as a midfielder. He represented Egypt at the 1952 Summer Olympics and spent his club career with Zamalek from 1948 to 1954. He also played for the Egyptian national team from 1949 to 1954.
Kabil started at Zamalek in 1948 after moving from the Al Ahly youth team. His talent impressed Helmy Zamora, who told Zamalek’s president Mohammed Haidar Pasha about him. Kabil joined Zamalek and the Military Academy, balancing his military career with football. He played seven years for Zamalek before moving to Suez in 1954 and then retiring from professional football.
A memorable moment for him was the 1952 Egypt Cup final, when Zamalek defeated Al Ahly 2–0 and earned a trip to Syria and Lebanon. Prize money at the time was small, usually 25 to 50 piastres per win, with the largest payment being 200 pounds from Zamalek as a show of loyalty after Al Ahly tried to re-sign him. He was part of a generation of notable Egyptian players and is remembered for his contributions to Zamalek and Egyptian football. Mohamed Kabil passed away on 11 October 2023 at the age of 96.
