Modred the Mystic

Modred the Mystic is a Marvel Comics sorcerer created by Bill Mantlo, Yong Montano, and Marv Wolfman. He first appeared in Marvel Chillers #1 in October 1975. An ancient magic user from 6th-century London, Modred is tied to the dark book called the Darkhold, created by the Elder God Chthon. He briefly rejected an offer from Chthon’s emissary, the Other, but when the Other targeted his loved one Janice, Modred sacrificed his own soul to Chthon to protect her. Chthon’s influence left his mind damaged at times, and Modred was placed in suspended animation for centuries.

In the modern era, Modred reawakened and wove his way through various adventures. He clashed with heroes like Spider-Woman, the Thing, Captain Britain, Captain America, and the Avengers. He was sometimes controlled by Chthon and even used the Scarlet Witch as a host to reach his goals. After a long arc of battles, he was exiled and later returned, resuming his pursuit of magic and the Darkhold’s power. He led the Darkhold Redeemers for a time, fighting demons and other threats, and continued to pursue the Darkhold’s magic and a way to regain his soul.
