Mistborn: The Final Empire is Brandon Sanderson’s first Mistborn novel, published in 2006. It takes place on the world of Scadrial, where ash falls from the sky and mysterious mists come at night. A thousand years ago a tyrant known as the Lord Ruler seized power and ruled as a god-king, keeping society split between the powerful nobles and the oppressed skaa.

In this world, magic called Allomancy lets people gain powers by swallowing and burning metals. Most Allomancers can use only one metal, but a rare few, called Mistborn, can use all metals. Their abilities include superhuman strength, sharper senses, and the power to influence metal objects.

The story follows Kelsier, a bold thief who discovers he is Mistborn. He escapes a brutal prison and forms a crew to overthrow the empire. He recruits Vin, a wary street urchin who learns she is also Mistborn. Vin trains with the crew, uses her powers at social events to spy on the nobles, and falls in love with Elend Venture, the thoughtful heir of the Venture family.

Kelsier’s plan is to provoke a war among the nobles and then topple the Final Empire by seizing its wealth, especially the precious metal atium. The rebellion faces many dangers, and Kelsier is killed in a direct confrontation with the Lord Ruler. His death sparks the rebellion to carry on.

Vin pushes forward, learning new skills and eventually facing the Lord Ruler in the imperial palace. She discovers a way to challenge his seemingly unbeatable power and defeats him, bringing down his thousand-year rule. With the tyranny ended, the skaa rise up and Luthadel begins to reform under leaders like Elend Venture, moving toward a more democratic government.

The book is the first in a trilogy, followed by The Well of Ascension and The Hero of Ages. It’s available as an audiobook and has inspired ongoing adaptations and media projects. The Mistborn series is praised for its inventive magic system and rich world-building, and it remains a popular fantasy classic.
