Major League Productions
Major League Productions (MLP) is a United Kingdom record label and production company based in Oxfordshire. Founded in the 1990s by Mike Dixon, it began as Major League Records and later operated under names such as MLPLIVE and MLPMAN, with several brands including Billy’s Discs and Records Shack. The company works worldwide and is part of Hyper UK/Hyper Worldwide.
MLP covers a wide range of genres, including rock, funk, soul, jazz, indie, punk, techno, house, classical, and modern styles. Its products include CDs and audio downloads, while its services span audio restoration, record label activities, MP3 downloads, and production work for live TV, corporate videos, video advertising, and sports films. The label has also run live events and provided broadcasting services through partnerships with broadcasters like the BBC and RTE.
Online and digital presence have been important for MLP. The MLPLIVE shop opened in 2007 to sell CDs directly to fans, while MLPMAN operates on eBay and Amazon. The company launched a YouTube channel, MLPLIVE1, and began using QR codes on CD releases in 2009. It also maintained an active presence on social media, including a Twitter feed launched in 2013.
As of 2020, MLP reduced its live services to concentrate on back-catalogue work, with the possibility of new vinyl releases for signed artists. The label is known for releasing a large catalog of archival live recordings from classic bands, remastered with care and fully authorised by the artists. Notable examples include live sets from Home, Caravan, Soft Machine, Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band, The Groundhogs, Thin Lizzy, Climax Blues Band, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, and many others.
MLP operates through multiple divisions and brands under Hyper UK/Hyper Worldwide, continuing to curate and reissue historic recordings while exploring new digital and vinyl releases.
