Mission Reds

The Mission Reds were a Minor League Baseball team in San Francisco, playing in the Pacific Coast League from 1926 to 1937. The team came to San Francisco in 1926 when the Vernon Tigers from Los Angeles moved there and became the Mission Reds, named after San Francisco’s Mission District. Locals often called them “the Missions,” and reports sometimes used Reds or Missions interchangeably.

Home games were at Recreation Park (1926–1930) and Seals Stadium (1931–1937). They were rivals to the San Francisco Seals and never built a large fan base. They finished first only once, in 1929, but lost the post-season to the Hollywood Stars. Their overall record was 1,088 wins and 1,117 losses (.480).

In 1935, manager Gabby Street was suspended indefinitely for assaulting an umpire. In 1938, the team was moved back to Los Angeles by owner Fleischaker, and the Hollywood Stars name was revived, ending the Mission Reds’ run.
