Studio Trigger
Trigger, Inc., also known as Studio Trigger, is a Japanese independent animation studio founded in 2011 by former Gainax staffers Hiroyuki Imaishi and Masahiko Ōtsuka. It is based in Kichijōji, Musashino, Tokyo, and is part of the Ultra Super Pictures group.
The studio is known for works such as Kill la Kill (2013–14), Little Witch Academia (short films in 2013 and 2015; TV series in 2017), Promare (2019), BNA: Brand New Animal (2020), Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (2022), and Delicious in Dungeon (2024). It also produced the animated continuations of Gridman the Hyper Agent: SSSS.Gridman (2018), SSSS.Dynazenon (2021), and Gridman Universe (2023).
History and background: Imaishi’s fame from Gurren Lagann helped spark Trigger, which was founded on August 22, 2011. The name and website were revealed in October 2011. Their first release was for the video game Project X Zone. They released Little Witch Academia as a short film and then created Kill la Kill, their first TV series (2013–2014). In July 2013, they ran a Kickstarter to fund a second Little Witch Academia episode, raising over $625,518.
Trigger helped form Ultra Super Pictures in 2011 with Sanzigen and Ordet. In 2018 the studio started a Patreon to fund projects and merchandise. By February 2025, Patreon had two tiers ($1 and $5), with over 6,000 supporters and more than $3,000 per month.
In 2023 Trigger acquired the rights to Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt and Gurren Lagann, and announced a follow-up Panty & Stocking series along with a North American re-screening of the Gurren Lagann movies.
