Miercurea Nirajului
Miercurea Nirajului (Hungarian: Nyárádszereda) is a town in Mureș County, Romania. It lies in the Székely Land of eastern Transylvania, on the Transylvanian Plateau by the Niraj River and its tributaries Nirajul Mic and Valea spre Șardu.
The town administers seven villages: Beu (Székelybő), Dumitreștii (Demeterfalva), Lăureni (Kisszentlőrinc), Moșuni (Székelymoson), Șardu Nirajului (Székelysárd), Tâmpa (Székelytompa), and Veța (Vece).
Population and ethnicity: In 2011 the town had 5,554 residents, with 83.3% Hungarians, 10.4% Romanians, and 6.3% Roma. The 2021 census recorded 5,554 residents, of whom 77.9% were Hungarians, 8.3% Romanians, and 6.46% Roma.
History: The first written mention of Miercurea Nirajului dates to 1493, when it was called Oppidum Zereda. In 1604 István Bocskay was elected prince of Transylvania here. Until 1918 it belonged to Maros-Torda County in the Kingdom of Hungary. After World War I, the Treaty of Trianon in 1920 transferred it to Romania.
Economy: The town hosts the Miercurea Nirajului gas field.
Location: It is about 24 kilometers east of Târgu Mureș, the county capital.
