Middle Forge Junction

Middle Forge Junction is a key spot on the Dean Forest Railway where two lines meet: Lydney to Parkend (High Level) and Lydney to Norchard (Low Level). The name comes from a forge in the River Lyd valley; there are other forges near Tufts Junction and beyond Lydney Junction.

The junction is about 450 yards (410 meters) from Norchard. It operates with a three-lever ground frame that is locked by a token. The Norchard Low-Level outer signal sits on the Lydney Town side and is interlocked with the ground frame. This is the longest-pull signal at Norchard and is controlled from lever 13. A cable tensioner sits behind the lever frame to manage cable expansion and contraction along its length.
