Mexican golden trout

The Mexican golden trout is a small, colorful fish in the salmon family. It is found only in a few high-elevation streams in western Mexico, in the Sierra Madre Occidental. Specifically, it lives in the pristine headwaters of the Fuerte, Sinaloa, and Culiacán river basins.

Appearance and size
Male and female trout look different. Males have noticeably longer jaws. They both show blue marks along the sides, a purple sheen along the lateral line, and a bright golden-yellow belly. The top and tail have small black spots, with larger spots on the dorsal fin. Pectoral, pelvic, and anal fins are light orange with white tips. They stay relatively small, with most adults under about 25 cm (10 inches).

Scientific name and history
The Mexican golden trout’s scientific name is Oncorhynchus chrysogaster (Needham & Gard, 1964). It belongs to the genus Oncorhynchus, after a 1989 reclassification that moved many Pacific basin trout from Salmo to Oncorhynchus. The name chrysogaster comes from Greek words meaning “golden belly.” It was once called Salmo chrysogaster.

Conservation status and where it lives
This species is listed as Near Threatened. It has a very limited range, known from about 15 locations across three river systems. It lives in small, cool streams formed by spring-fed pools above about 1,500 meters (5,000 feet) in rugged canyons with forests nearby.

Threats
The biggest risks are habitat loss and pollution, plus competition or interbreeding with introduced rainbow trout. Because the streams it inhabits are small and isolated, any negative impact can affect the entire population.

What can help
Protecting and restoring clean, cold headwater streams is crucial. Regulations on harvesting and measures to reduce water pollution can help, along with engaging local communities in sustainable use. Well-managed tourism and ecotourism also offer a chance to benefit people while preserving the trout’s habitat.
