Meridionalism is the study of the economic and social problems of Southern Italy. It began in the 19th century after Southern Italy joined the new Italian nation during unification, and it continued into the 20th century. The aim was not only to study these issues but also to find ways to close the gap between the North and the South. People who do this work are called meridionalists.
